ABSTRACT

An internship is undeniably a very important stage in the education of certain fields of expertise. As it provides real-world experience to all the theories and laws studied in school, putting them into action, and being able to make use of the acquired skills for a betterment in our profession as engineers. Engineering is a key profession with a very broad scope which brings a lot of change and innovation in this ever-changing world of ours. As engineers, we are expected to do research and catchup with day-to-day advancement in current technological discoveries. In this report, I share my experience being at SUMMIT TECH together with most of the electrical devices I came in contact with and their working principles bearing in mind that this report is in no way for profound analysis. The current report brings out some of the drawbacks and challenges faced, together with proposed solutions and improvements made during the course of this internship. This internship to me was great opportunity and a great experience because it reinforced the theoretical knowledge bestowed on us by our most professional lecturers and made more familiar what engineering has to off

CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON HOST COMPANY
1.1 Introduction and services provided

An internship is a period of work experience offered by an organization for a limited period of time. Once confined to medical graduates, internship is used practice for a wide range of placements in businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. They are typically undertaken by students and graduates looking to gain relevant skills and experience in a particular field. Employers benefit from these placements because they often recruit employees from their best interns, who have known capabilities, thus saving time and money in the long run.

Internships for professional careers are similar in some ways. Similar to internships, apprenticeships transition students from vocational school into the workforce. The lack of standardization and oversight leaves the term “internship” open to broad interpretation. Interns may be high school students, college and university students, or post-graduate adults. These positions may be paid or unpaid and are temporary. Many large corporations, particularly investment banks, have “insight” programs that serve as a pre-internship event numbering a day to a week, either in persons or virtually.

Typically, an internship consists of an exchange of services for experience between the intern and the organization. Internships are used to determine whether the intern still has an interest in that field after the real-life experience. In addition, an internship can be used to build a professional network that can assist with letters of recommendation or lead to future employment opportunities. Internship exist in a wide variety of industries and settings. An internship can be paid, unpaid, or partially paid (in the form of a stipend). Internships may be part time or full time and are usually flexible with student’s schedules. A typical internship lasts between one and four months, but can be shorter or longer, depending on the organization involved. The act of job shadowing may also constitute interning.
1.1.1. Some common goals and objectives of an internship.
College often establishes requirements that interns must meet to complete the internship program successfully and earn college credit. These goals then become part of the evaluation process at the end of his time with the company, and they need to reflect the requirements set by the college. The goals may be long term for the entire length og internship, or they may be short term goals. Some of these goals include;
 Gain real-world experience
A primary goal of any internship is to gain as much experience as possible. While an intern may not have major tasks assigned to him, he should pay close attention to all the steps that go into completing a job. Interns should seek opportunities to work in a variety of situations. For example, PR internship goals might include writing web content, designing ads, assisting customers and working on ad campaigns.
As the internship progresses, the intern should receive progressively more challenging assignments. The broader an intern’s experiences, the better he can determine if the job is one he wants to pursue after college.

 Bolster resume
A key goal of any internship is resume-building. The intern wants to not only list the internship on his resume, but to also have tangible examples of things he created during that time.
For example, if the intern has the task of creating a multimedia presentation for his supervisor, the presentation can become part of the intern’s resume. Tangible example of job skills from the internship on a resume provide an edge for the intern over people who cannot document similar experience.
 Start networking
An internship offer’s an opportunity to explore career options and social network, according to the KU University Career Center. Also, the intern may find someone to serve as his mentor. This may be his supervisor, or it may be someone else who is willing to let the intern ask detailed questions about the job. A mentor also serves as a sounding board and may offer encouragement to the intern. The intern may stay in touch with the mentor long after he completes the internship. In addition to these job contacts, the intern should make every effort to get to know as many people as possible at work. Any of them might prove instrumental in the intern’s future as he makes job applications and asks for references.
 Land a job
Internships, particularly in high demand fields, can lead to an offer of full-time employment after graduation. Additionally, some industries are much more likely than others to offer full-time jobs to their interns. Almost 60% of members who interned at companies in the accounting industry accepted a full-time job at the same company in the year following their internship. Compare that to companies in the mining and metal industries, where only 21% of interns take a full-time job at the same company a year later.
 Increase of confidence
An internship will, of course, help one to find out more about the work environment but also about yourself.
He/she may have a clear idea of his/her strengths, weaknesses, likes, and dislikes. Knowing that you have hands-on experience will make you more confident in job hunting and interviews.
 Performance test
One of the core reasons and purposes of an internship is to expose you to a special job, profession, or industry. While you may have an idea of what a job is, it is only when you do it that you will know if this is what you think, whether you have the education and skills to do it, and if you like it.
