SURMARY.
This report is based on a six weeks internship program done at Eta-Besong law chamber in the month of July 2022. It is presented in five chapters.
In chapter ONE, which is the General Introduction, this report present what internship is all about, the objective of internship, a brief historical background of the Eta-Besong law chambers, its nature as a law chamber and equally present the internal organization of the chamber.
Chapter TWO, deals with the area of internship, the composition of the chambers, its internal and external functions and ends with the code of conduct of advocates and interns at the Eta-Besong law chamber.
Chapter THREE examines the techniques involved in the interpretation of statute as regard the Golden rule, the Literal rule, and the mischief rule, accompanied with practical examples.Chapter FOUR will focus in discussing my practical experience in the Eta-Besong law chambers and
at the court as well during my internship from the first week to the last week. It will equally include some of the challenges faced during my period of internship.
Chapter FIVE lastly is based on conclusions and recommendation.
CHAPTER ONE
GENERAL INTRODUCTION
Course law 496, entitled “Court in Action” has an objective to enable final year students to acquaint themselves with the practice procedures that have to do with litigation. It is having objective to introduce students to the practical part of the theory they have been studying in class.
This course essentially entails the internship program done by students during holidays. Thus, students are expected to enroll in any law firm or chamber of their choice which are recommended by the school.
This is the practical aspect of legal theory. Thereafter, the students are expected to produce an internship report which shall be signed by the head of their respective chambers or law firm.
1.1 WHAT IS INTERNSHIP
Internship is a program prescribed by the University authorities to a undergraduate students of the Faculty of Laws and Political Science, which has been made a course with code “ Pul 496” and titled “ Court In Action”. Talking on the aspect of professionalism, it has an objective to enable law students to acquaint themselves with practical procedures which has to do with litigation.
Definition
Base on the oxford languages, internship is the position of a student or trainee who works in an organization, sometimes without remuneration in order to gain work experience or a satisfied requirement for a qualification. Therefore, internship is aimed at giving legal scholars the opportunity to see the practicability of law, blending theory with practice, gaining more knowledge in the field of law and so doing boasting the aspiration the students have for the noble profession.
1.2 THE LAWE FIRM / CHAMBERS
1.2.1 DEFINITION
A law firm is a company that involves itself in the business of law. It is also a business entity, formed by an association of lawyers who engaged in legal practice. In general, members of a law firm share a variety of clients, and the profit are thereby accrued by providing services to those clients.
The law firm provides a variety of specialized legal services to individuals, or associations , or companies. The primary service of a law firm is to be an advisory to clients about their legal rights and liabilities, and representing them in matters related to civil, criminal, business transactions, intellectual properties and all others in which their assistance is sought.
In practice, a chamber is a private room or office of a judge, where the judge hears motions, signs papers, or does other business pertaining to his office when he is not holding a session of court.
