ABSTRACT

Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) have a significant role in the economic landscape economies. But now they face challenges with their financial performance. This is linked to the way they manage their cash. Which is the driving force why this study sort to assess the effects of cash management on the financial performance of SMEs in Buea. The study has as specific objectives to establish the effects of cash budgeting on the performance of SMEs in Buea and also the effects of cash control on the performance of SMEs in Buea. This study was cross sectional in nature and the study population for this work included some selected registered small and medium sized enterprises in Buea. This comprise of the staff and owners of SMEs. The researcher worked with 10 enterprises which therefore made a total of 40 respondents as the target population for the study. This study adopted a non- probability purposive sampling technique. Equally the sample size for this study was made up of 10 enterprises and since the researcher had decided to work with 2 staffs per enterprise, this therefore gave a total of 40 respondents as the sample size of the study was 10 enterprises. The research made use of both primary and secondary data.  Data was analysed using the multiple regression analysis to get the effects between cash management and financial performance of these SMEs in Buea. Also, tables and graphs were used to present the data. Based on the specific objectives the findings revealed that there is a positive effect between cash budgeting and cash control on the financial performance of SMEs in Buea. The study brought forward some recommendations such as increase in cash control procedures by the enterprises and also the government should institute collaborative strategies and procedures that will assist the operators of SMEs to improve their cash management practices.
