ABSTRACT

This case study examines the effects of mismanagement and embezzlement of public funds in Cameroon. The mismanagement and embezzlement of public funds have severe consequences for the country’s economy, development, and social well-being. Through a comprehensive analysis of the situation, this study explores the various impacts of these practices on key sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and public services.

The findings reveal that mismanagement and embezzlement of public funds have led to a significant decline in the quality of public services, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to quality education and healthcare, and compromised public safety. Moreover, the diversion of funds meant for development projects has hindered economic growth and perpetuated poverty, as resources are not utilized effectively to improve the living conditions of the population.

The study also highlights the corrosive effects of corruption on public trust and confidence in government institutions. Widespread mismanagement and embezzlement erode citizens’ faith in the government’s ability to address their needs and create a conducive environment for sustainable development. Consequently, this undermines social cohesion and stability, hindering progress and exacerbating socio-economic inequalities.

To mitigate the adverse effects, the study recommends a multi-faceted approach that includes strengthening accountability mechanisms, improving transparency in public financial management, and enhancing anti-corruption measures. Furthermore, building institutional capacity and promoting a culture of integrity and ethical behavior among public officials are crucial for addressing the root causes of mismanagement and embezzlement.

Overall, this case study underscores the urgent need for effective governance reforms to combat mismanagement and embezzlement of public funds in Cameroon. By prioritizing transparency, accountability, and integrity, the government can restore public trust, promote sustainable development, and ensure the efficient and equitable use of public resources for the benefit of all citizens.
