1.1 Background to Internship

Definitions

University of Toronto defines internship to   be a short term experience which can build skills in a specific field or career area.

Also, Internship is a form of experimental education that integrates knowledge and theory learned In the classroom, with practical application and skill development in a professional work setting .Interns usually have supervisors who give them task to carryout and evaluate their overall work.

1.2 Characteristics of Internship

Internship is carried out as a requirement for undergraduate or post graduate either to discover something new or ascertain if the pathway they are working on is really what they want.

>It provides substantive and challenging work experience According to the University of St Thomas it entails supervisors being assigned to students which are mentoring and educational.

> Opportunity to observe professionals in action: participate in staff meetings, clients meeting attend presentations and or conference workshop and with professionals in the department (from the University of St Thomas).

>It is usually a short period of time in which students gain personal and professional development through challenging work, assignment and task.

>Must be completed before a student graduate from the university.

>It is Planned and controlled through consultation with the department or University so as to fit in undergraduate experience.

>It includes career related experiences that complement what is learnt in the classroom.

>A student will have a reflection and evaluation process at the conclusion of the internship.

>It builds upon the relationship the University, college or department has with employers.

Internship is most successful when the student, University and employer all the share the responsibility in making it valuable experience.
