ABSTRACT

The aquatic environment now is increasingly being affected by human activities which include notably urban sewage, urbanisation, agricultural activities, domestic activities and industrial discharge mostly in rivers. This project analyses heavy metals sources and occurrence in stream sediments.

These heavy metals occur in air, soil and water some of which are of economic importance while some are dangerous and cause harm to the ecosystem. The degree of heavy metal contamination in sediments and the risks posed by heavy metals can be studied using several methods some of which includes; Sediment Quality Guidelines (SQGs), Geoaccumulation Indices (Igeos), Enriched Factors ( EFs), Contamination Factors (CFs). Statistical methods are also used to analyse the concentration of heavy metals in sediments. These methods are; Pearson Correlation Analysis, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Factor Analysis, Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA), R-Mode Factor Analysis, Pollution Load Index.
